Thay-En-Da-Ne-Gea #418 Metal Neckerchief Slide

Gavin Murdoch sends along this scan of a neckerchief slide used by Thay-En-Da-Ne-Gea #418 in the 1970’s.

Thay-En-Da-Ne-Gea #418 Metal Neckerchief Slide

The slide reminds me of slides sold by Grey Owl which back in the day (late 1960’s and early 1970’s) sold several of these types of slides both plain and with various totems. It was a long subway ride out to nearly the end of the line in Queens, NY to get supplies for Ritual and Dance outfits.

These days Grey Owl is an Internet Store and located in New Jersey. I have no interest or affiliation with them but not they carry beaded sashes on their site; but I don’t see neckerchief slides or OA belt buckles any where on the site.

  1. Hi Bill-
The #418 slide is exactly (except the totem) alike that of the #357 slide I shared a while back. Good to hear more about the possible background. I had ever heard the potential “Grey Owl” relation to this item. Again, thanks for your input.

P.S. – Hard to imagine these slides ever being worn on a neckerchief because they are quite heavy and the slide ring seems a bit too large to secure on the neckerchief.

  2. Hi Bill,

This particular Grey Owl Totem Slide is not unique to lodge #418, but is also know to have been used by members of Uncas lodge 297 in CT (their lodge totem was a black fox). These could be ordered through the mail from Grey Owl with any of several dozen different totems that were available in thei catalogue.
