Gotta Be First?

Roy More speculates in a recent post on his blog about getting it now.  He surmises that some of the items issued for the 2010 Jamboree may not be seen regularly especially those listed in smaller quantities based on what he was seeing traded at the Jamboree.

Prior to the Jamboree, eBay had around 74,000 items in the Boy Scouts category. Actually it had dropped as low as 64,000 in late July. Now it is over 81,000 after getting as high as 84,000….

In our trading we also picked some older JSPs but not many. Most of what we got were from 2005 but we even got some back to 1997. The older JSPs turn up from time to time but very few collections are coming out. Thus, if you are trying to fill in older issues you might find some local ones at local TORs or have to do an awful lot of searching on eBay and dealer sales lists for a long time.

This is the dilemma of the collector;  should I pay the, perhaps, artificially high price to get the issue now or will it be available in quantity later.

Please grant me the ability
to determine the restricted delegate issue at first glance;
the ability to wait for the cheap trader version;
and wisdom to know the difference.

We can see this with some of the Jamboree issues.  The first example of the Kittan Lodge 2-piece set for the 2010 Jamboree appeared on eBay recently and it went for over $ 69.00.  Subsequent auctions saw it sell in the  $ 15.00 – 20.00 range, and there are now a couple available at this writing starting at $ 9.99.  The winner of the first auction filled his need, but paid highly for the privilege.

Clicking on the image will bring you to the auction for the next few months.

Yet there are other items though that may only appear once or not again for many years.  What is a collector to do?

“I heartily accept the motto, — “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe, — “That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.” – Henry David Thoreau – 1849
