Whatsit - Endicott NY Shirt with Felt Patch

Question MarkRoger Schustereit posted a question on Patch-L regarding a Scout uniform shirt he saw on eBay. The shirt carried a community strip from Endicott, NY. For those of you that don’t know, that is near Binghamton, NY and within the area covered by Otahnagon Lodge #172.

Ray Gould thought

I believe it could possibly be an early Camp Tuscarora or Lodge #172 item….since the patch depicts the pine tree. Consulting OA images/Blue Book, I learned that Otahnagon means “Camp in the Pines” which I assume refers to Camp Tuscarora. It is located on the temporary position of the uniform (certainly legitimate for a camp patch and not unheard of for early OA pieces). It has me intrigued. Perhaps a #172 “old timer” could lend some authority. I’m not sure which era the uniform dates to (removable buttons)….I assume somewhere between the 1930’s and 1940’s…..any other thoughts.

I added the note that the totem for #172 is the Pine Tree, but had no other information at the time.

The Lodge history has the following information.

Otahnagon Lodge History in Susquenango Council
Otahnagon Lodge had a full history for almost 65 years. Founded in 1939, the Lodge has served Susquenango Council faithfully and has sought to preserve the traditions of the Order of the Arrow heerfully and respectfully. The lodge’s totem is the pine tree, and the name Otahnagon means “camp in the pines.” The lodge flap has remained similar in design since it’s first issue.
Since the founding of Susquenango Council’s scout reservation, Camp Tuscarora in 1953, our lodge has provided the skills and manpower for both the construction of several facilities at camp and for the general maintenance necessary to open and close the camp each year.

If the Camp was founded in 1953, I suspect the uniform and felt patch pre-dates the founding of Camp Tuscarora. The Camp Book by Minnihan and Sherman show two earlier camps for Susquenango Council; Camp Kiamesha and Camp Spaulding which are confirmed on the council website.

Can anyone shed any light on the patch below?

Newly discovered Otahnagon Lodge #172 Ochenang Chapter Neckerchief N1

DiscoveryRay Gould brings word of a new discovery from Otahnagon Lodge #172 in the Binghamton, NY Area. The Blue Book lists six known chapters for Lodge #172, two of which, Konoh and Ches Ches Nopa, were known to have issued neckerchiefs. It now appears a third chapter Ochenang also issued a neckerchief as a means of chapter identification.

While he has not been able to confirm this issue with anyone from the lodge yet; the design contains all of the elements you would expect from a Otahnagon Chapter issue. The Lodge number (but not the name), WWW, Red Arrow and the chapter name (and the spelling matches the ‘known’ chapter name).

You can see it below.

Otahnagon Lodge #172 Ochenang Chapter Neckerchief N1

A few minutes searching the web,

In the Oneida dialect written Ochenang, and meaning ball thistles. The place was afterward called Chenango Point, and is now Binghamton.

The Ball Thistle appears to be the plant design on the neckerchief.

Tentatively at least, the Blue Book Listing would be:

Heard Around the State.

I have several information nodules that have been passed on to me from around the state. If you have any new information about your New York Lodge or Chapter, please send it along to share with the rest of the readers of the blog. As always, I’m looking to trade for or buy any new issues from New York State OA Lodges and Chapters.

In no particular order:

  • Buckskin Lodge #412 will be issuing a patch for their recent lodge banquet held at the end of December 2006. The patch was limited to one per attendee. Those who were at the banquet drew a number at random and that will be the number of their particular patch. I understand that the numbers will be directly embroidered into the design as have several of their previous lodge and chapter issues. Looking for a scan from one of the Buckskin brothers when this is issued.
  • Suanhacky Lodge #49 also issued a dinner patch from its banquest a couple of weeks back and subsequently issued a new regular issue flap. I hope to have images and both in hand shortly.
  • Cory Haynes from Loon Lodge #364 recently advised that “I just found out today from the Loon Lodge Advisor that the sunset flap will be issued 1 per current 2006 registered lodge member, and not be available for the public (unfortunately this is what the youth voted to do).” Looking for a scan of this one too (and a trade would be nice).
  • Separately I have also heard that Kittan Lodge #364 will be voting (re-voting?) on whether to use the number #19 or 364. Also they are considering amongst several designs for their first flap.
  • George Jennings brings word from Otahnagon Lodge #172 that while they issued an event patch for last years banquet, there was no patch issued for this years event.
  • Half Moon #28 has also requested designs from its members for a new trading flap. No word on when it will be voted on.
  • Ktemaque Lodge #15 has issued 2 new patches, no word on what type or design. Does anyone else have any information on these?
  • Shinnecock Lodge #360 will issue a special 60th Anniversary Lodge Flap in 2007. This special flap will reportedly replace the normal lodge flap during this 2007 only. It will be issued to new brothers at the conclusion of their Ordeal Weekend.

Your lodge not mentioned here?

Send me some information.

Lodge #172 Otahnagon eS2006 Winter Banquet Flap

Lodge 172 has issued a flap for its 2006 Winter Banquet. Although its flap shaped, by Blue book Conventions, it is an event patch, so will likely be numbered as the eS2006.

George Jennings brings word of two new flaps from Lodge #172 Otahnagon to commemorate the election of Sean Muarry to the office of National Chief. There were two issues with the same basic design, the GMY border was the tougher of the two.

Lodge #172 Otahnagon YN1 or ZN1?

I recently came across an unlisted neckerchief from Lodge #172 Otahnagon. The Neckechief is on a ‘professional’ neckerchief blank, the NYS shape is ironed-on and the wrting appears to be in ink or marker. It is otherwise mint.
The lodge advisor in initial conversations has indicated that it is certainly not a current (last 10 years) issue nor does he recognize it as an historical issue. It is likley a handmade “one-off” made by an individual and hence a private issue. (Image and more info ‘below the fold’.  click on more)
