Area 2-H 1961 Conclave Patch and Neckerchief

ConclaveThe 1961 Area 2-H Conclave was held at Crumhorn Mountain Scout Reservation and hosted by Onteroraus Lodge #402.  According to Don Tuttle’s Onteroraus Checklist the Area 2-H consisted of

eight lodges comprised Area 2H, which covered an area of half of Central New York State. The eight lodges and their totems included: Onteroraus (three mountains), Otahnagon (pine tree), Ahwagee (Indian), Seneca (Indian head), Wakanda (bear’s head), Chi Sigma (Fontenac Falls), Ganeodiyo (Turtle), and Tahgajute (Thunderbird).

The three-day conclave, which began on September 1, presented costumed Indian dance contests and the Tap Out Ceremony to the public. In a local newspaper article about the 1961 conclave, the Order of the Arrow was billed as “a nationwide society within Scouting dedicated to the preservation of Indian Customs.”

The neckerchief issued for the event pictured the lodge totems:

There was also a hat-shaped pocket patch issued for the event.

Is anyone aware of any other items issued for this conclave?

Onteroraus Lodge checklist updates

ChecklistDon Tuttle who maintains the Onteroraus Lodge checklist at his website, Scoutgraphics Ink USA is looking for some images.

Since returning from the WSJ, I’ve had a little time to add a couple new conclave neckerchiefs to the Onteroraus checklist. They include:

1984 NE-2D SECTION CONCLAVE, Camp Tuscarora neckerchief
1985 “WE WHO LOVE THE WOODS AND CAMPING” 2-D neckerchief

The ‘85 neckerchief includes a standing bear in the design which I assume represents Wakanda Lodge (Stuben Area Council, Bath, NY), lodge hosts for the conclave that year.

I have not seen any patches associated with these neckers but assume they exist. If any NY OA collectors can provide a scan of these, I would be glad to add them to my website at http://www.scoutgraphicsink.com. Click on Lodge Flaps and Other Memorabilia.

Can anyone help him out with some scans?

Whatsit? - Whensit? - Section NE-2B Patch Take 2

I had previously posted on a Section Patch from NE-2B, based on the responses to that posting, it was determined that it was not a Section Conclave issue, and was issued by the Section in the period from after the 1988 Conclave and prior to the Nischa Nimat Lodge #181 merger in September 1990.

Question MarkBelow we have what appears to be another Section NE-2B patch. Based on the lodges listed (Half Moon #28, Skanondo #64, Onteroraus #402, Nooteeming #443, and Munsi #444), it must have been issued after the September 1990 merger of Nischa Nimat Lodge #181 and prior to the 1994 Section realignments.

The patch contains the totems of the 5 lodges in the section and an Iroquois Longhouse.

Based on the information provided on the earlier patch, I don’t think it is a n undated Section Conclave issue. I know it is nit a conclave issues from 1991 or 1994 since I have both.

Can anyone confirm that it is not a conclave patch put a closer date on when it was issued?

Onteroraus Lodge #402 S47 Brotherhood Flap

New IssueThe reason for my updated description of the Onteroraus Lodge #402 OBV set will hopefully now become clear. Don Tuttle, the Lodge Historian had advised me that there was a newly ordered Brotherhood flap in the new OBV Series. As you can see in the scan below, the lower right branch on the birch tree, now has leaves.

Onteroraus Lodge #402 S28 and S44 Vigil Flaps

New IssueThe Third in the updated OBV Spring, Winter,Fall set from Onteroraus Lodge #402 is the Vigil flap. The S44 is a computer designed version of the S28. Without the issues side by side, the most telling difference is the Blue/Light Blue sky. There are several other smaller difference, a lighter green tress and more detailed FDL in the S44.

Onteroraus Lodge #402 S27 and S43 Brotherhood Flaps

New IssueThe Second in the updated OBV Spring, Winter,Fall set from Onteroraus Lodge #402 is the Brotherhood flap.

The S43 is a computer designed version of the S27. Without the issues side by side, the most telling difference is the flat white sky. There are several other smaller difference, a darker green border and FDL. And at least in my specimens, the S43 CD version is slightly smaller than the Swiss S27.

My S43 flap is 127mm in length vs. about 130mm for the S27. This is about the thickness of the border.

Onteroraus Lodge #402 S42 Ordeal Flap

New IssueDon Tuttle has brought word of a new issue from Onteroraus Lodge #402. Before I get to it, I need to report on some other new issues which will require me to renumber the 2006 NOAC flap (previously the S42 now S45) and the 2006 NOAC Section NE-3B Flap from Lodge 402 (previously the S43 now S46).

The first issue here is the S42. This is the updaated version of the S26 Ordeal Flap. As you can see from the scan below, the S26 has Swiss Embroidery and the new S42 is Computer Designed (CD), the border is also a Darker Red.

Onteroraus #402 Neckerchief Discovery N5

I had previously blogged about an undiscovered Lodge #402 Neckerchief variation here.

Well it looks like I’ve uncovered another one. This one, while not Mint in Package, appears unused and unwashed, although their is some faint discoloring in the white cloth above the Lodge name.

This version has a Bright Blue Background and Dark Brown Lodge Name, Tree Trunk and Branch.

Don Tuttle, the Lodge 402 historian, believes there was only one order of these neckerchiefs.  I do have 3 distinct color variations, however.  Are they prototypes?  Does anyone else have more than the LBL variety?

Lodge #402 Onteroraus R2a and R2b

I recently acquired what I believe to be the ‘missing’ variation (at least from my collection) of the Lodge 402 R2.

The Blue book describes the difference as in the R2 a and b varieties as follows:
The R2a is described as having “darker GRN mountains” and the R2b as having  “Mint GRN mountains.”

As you can see from the  scans below, there is a difference in the greens;  one lighter and one darker.  Is this the 2 variations?  Does anyone out there have both varieties with a more pronounce color difference?  If so could you please provide clear side-by-side scans for me to post.
