Focus on Fakes - Lodge #34 Lynx ZS1

Chris Meacham pointed out another modern fake to me a few days ago.

This seems to continue one of the recent trends on fakes.

Produce a patch for lodges that never issued a patch, no longer exist and don’t use any of the Boy Scout trademarks. It certainly reduces the number of potential complaints to authority.

The Blue Book advises that Lynx was chartered in 1928 and changed its name to Gonlix circa 1936.

Which would make this the

Suanhacky Lodge #49 QS1

Dave Scocca sent me an email about a month ago that I just uncovered from my pile questioning the origins of the 49QS1.

The issue dates back to the mid-late 1980’s and was uncovered by Frank Mullane and Gene Berman.  Frank had it first and traded it to Gene as a curiousity.

Gene, began digging and eventually wrote a short piece in, if memory serves, the National Scout Collectors Society Quarterly.  As far as he could determine,  the lodge never ordered, nor was offered this flap.  Although it was the basic design of the times, the color combination and wording was never used.   It was likely a manufactueres error, and discoverd by the manufactures quality control before being sent to the lodge.

For the 80’s and 1990’s this was a seldom seen piece, but like several other fakes/misprints a number of these flaps have surfaced on our favorite auction site over the past few months.  The flap is pictured below.  Note the double Queens Council

Focus on Fakes - Ktemaque S10 & ZS4

Updated 9-27-06 - Adjust Blue Book Number for Fake.  Missed one
This is the second fake with simialr characteristecs. I recently posted on fa fake of the 1996 NOAC flap from Man-A-Hattin Lodge #82. Here is one from Ktemaque which I’ve recently noticed on eBay.

The top flap is the Ktemaque S10. Note the RED OBV Arrows and the Yellow Sun and inner border.

The bottom flap is the fake, the ZS4. The major distinguishing characteristic is the OBV arrows are outlined in BLK. The innr border and sun is also DYL or GLD. This difference is glaring when they are held side-by-side, but less obvious otherwise.

Focus on Fakes - Man-A-Hattin Lodge #82 ZS2

A number of these fakes have shown up on eBay recently. At least one seller openly referring to them as fakes. Gene Berman confirmed with the then Lodge Advisor Tom Bain, the Current Lodge Advisor John Ward and the 96 Contingent Leader David Ames that these flaps were never ordered by the lodge nor were they an order rejected by the lodge.

The upper image is the S11, the lower image is the Fake, ZS2.

Lodge #172 Otahnagon YN1 or ZN1?

I recently came across an unlisted neckerchief from Lodge #172 Otahnagon. The Neckechief is on a ‘professional’ neckerchief blank, the NYS shape is ironed-on and the wrting appears to be in ink or marker. It is otherwise mint.
The lodge advisor in initial conversations has indicated that it is certainly not a current (last 10 years) issue nor does he recognize it as an historical issue. It is likley a handmade “one-off” made by an individual and hence a private issue. (Image and more info ‘below the fold’.  click on more)

There are about 25 other non-NYS OA issues as well. By clicking on the links, you can see the images probably for the next 60 days or so.

They appear to be in the bidmystamp format rather than Changs. The seller ID is xflip97esales. At least they are listed as reproductions, and it was reported on Patch-L that the seller was going to stamp each patch as a replica.

Fakes, Reproductions and Spoofs

While in an ideal world, there would be no fakes or reproductions, that is not the case in the collecting world. When new reproductions are uncovered for NY OA Lodges, I will report them here. I typically will not report spoofs, unless they may be mistaken for lodge issues.

For those on Patch-L, there have been reports of a eBay seller “bidmystamp” who is apparently selling reproductions. The easiset way to distinguish them is they are modern looking with a cut edge as compared to a rolled edge on the origianl issues.

There are two of these of interest to NY OA traders.

34 Ona Yote ZR1 WHT R RED BLK LPR FDL BLK 1982-1992 3″ Round Fake of J1.

A third item has recently surface, although not from this seller. It appears to be a fake of the 402 S18 bit with an Orange Cut Edge border, similar in style to the two items above. It will likely be listed as the 402ZS1.

All three items can be found at John Pannell’s OAImages
