Camp Wauwepex building destroyed by fire

Boy Scout camp building destroyed by fire

On the afternoon of November 1, a fire broke out at Theodore Roosevelt Council’s Camp Wauwepex in Riverhead, New York.

The recreation hall at Camp Wauwepex in Wading River burned to the ground this afternoon.

The 5,000-square-foot wood frame building was fully engulfed in flames when Wading River firefighters arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m., Wading River Fire Chief Eric Cohen said. The fire department had numerous reports of heavy smoke in the area, which led firefighters to the conflagration at the Schiff Scout Reservation, off Wading River Manor Road.

“If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation.” –Samuel Adams, November 27, 1780
