Knowledge is Power - Nentico Lodge #12 X1
May of us have dreamed of finding that rare and valuable patch at a garage or estate sale. Stumbling on that hidden gem at a flea market or Salvation Army Store. But would you know it if you saw it?
I’m considering an occasional feature where I link to certain high priced memorabilia on our favorite auction site. It may or may not be from NY, it may not even be an OA item. Hopefully it may provide you with some knowledge which you can put to use.
Depending on the response this could become a regular feature. If you see something you would like me to highlight, let me know.
The first item is from Nentico Lodge #12. The patch pictured in the link is the X1 issue. An unassuming rectangular issue from a lodge which used the same design on their trader flap for decades, but this one is a hidden gem. Since I will be linking to eBay the link will only be good for 30-90 days.
As I write this, the bidding is already over $2400. Where do you think it will end?
The Blue Book describes it as X1 RED C WHT DYL REC; (1946)

With a $2400 starting bid, I think the owner of this piece knows exactly what he has. It’s more fun to watch folks who put stuff up with very low bids and then get shocked when it goes for thousands of dollars.
If it’s a lot of items with one hidden gem hidden in it, the seller then has to figure out which is the good patch.

It’s a wonderful issue, and a need–but I’m not near ready, willing, or able to lay down that kind of coin.
My collecting fantasy is to be the only eBay bidder on a 12 X1 that someone lists, starting at a buck, with no description other than “YELLOW BIRD PATCH”.

John,
The seller certainly knows what he has.
My idea was to use these posts to point out higher priced items to the readers which they might normally not otherwise encounter.
Arming the reader with the knowledge of its worth in the event they ever stumbled across one themselves.

Dave,
I know the feeling.
There are any number of pricey New York OA items which I will likely never have unless they are buried in that “Misc Lot of Boy Scout Patches”
